In the IELTS Listening Test, you will be asked to answer a sequence of questions based on a short audio recording about a specific topic. You need to practice identifying the key points being communicated in the audio format and applying them to the questions to take the listening part of the test. You may improve your IELTS score on this module by practicing answering sample questions. This article will teach you how to answer multiple-choice questions efficiently and effectively. It will also show you the four types of multiple-choice question types and provide you with techniques to answer them effectively.

The 4 distinct types of IELTS multiple choice questions

Typically, four types of questions are found in the IELTS multiple choice questions related to listening section. They are:

  1. Short answer multiple-choice questions: in short answer multiple-choice questions, you will be given a statement and must select a suitable answer from the list of choices. To choose the right answer, pay close attention to the whole recording.
  2. Sentence completion multiple choice questions: a sentence stem will be presented to you as a question in a sentence completion multiple choice question, and you have to pick one answer to finish it.
  3. Picture multiple-choice questions: here, you will be presented with a list of picture-based answers. You must pay attention to the recording to select the appropriate picture. It is acknowledged as one of the most demanding listening test question types.
  4. List questions type: here, you will be presented with a list of potential replies together with the question statement. Additionally, you must select more than one answer preference.

A step-by-step approach towards answering multiple-choice questions

Here we are outlining a step-by-step method for dealing with multiple-choice questions in the IELTS listening.

Examine the questions: read the provided questions carefully before the speaker or speakers begin. Knowing the kinds of questions you will be answering is essential as the kind of information that you should concentrate on.  Determine the sort of question, such as multiple choice, short answer, sentence completion, picture, or list questions. Your answers to the questions are predetermined by it.

Verify the title: there are instances when the questions have a title. If you locate it, take note of it and read that. It will help you comprehend the background. Additionally, you may learn what details to expect from the recording. You can more easily take in the necessary information if you listen with intention.

Underline the question's keywords: identify the question's keywords, then highlight them. It will provide you with guidance on which answer is correct. Come up with a few synonyms for the term. If you hear synonyms connected to the term while listening, pay closer attention to the tape.

Avoid distractions: in the audio, the distractors will be used to test your English listening skills. A word or phrase that modifies, reroutes, or corrects the provided information is the distractor.

Put your reply in writing: answers to IELTS multiple-choice listening questions will be provided as letters rather than words. For instance, you must put "B" instead of "restroom" in your response if the correct response is B) restroom.

Predict: you will not have any points deducted for incorrect answers. Thus, rather than leaving it empty, venture a guess. You might be correct in your guess as to the solution. Therefore, even if you were unaware of the precise answer, select an option based on what you understood.
