There is great news for individuals who serve spiritual and pastoral needs of the community as Alberta joins hands with other provinces to expand its provincial immigration program and accept applications from religious workers.
Alberta hosts many religious communities from a multiple range of traditions but currently there is no pathway for such workers to obtain permanent residency in Alberta. Many well-established religious workers who developed close ties with their communities have left the country after the expiry of their temporary residency. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) aims to attract these religious workers so that the religious organizations can serve their people better.
Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney said that religious faith plays an important role to many people in Alberta. He said that until now there had been no clear pathway for foreign clergy or religious workers to obtain residency in Alberta, and that the important part religious workers play in the wellbeing of Alberta communities are to be highlighted by amendments, which would bring Alberta’s policies into sync with several other provinces. Alberta Opportunity Stream, Alberta Express Entry Stream and Rural Renewal Stream allow religious professionals to apply if all the eligibility criteria are met.
Kaycee Madu, Minister of Labour and Immigration said that numerous communities in the province rely on spiritual leadership to protect their beliefs and prepare for the future. He said it is important to recognize the needs of immigrants to help them make a home in the province.
