Best 100 Cities to Live-In | 5 Canadian Cities in The List

Resonance Consultancy, a British Columbia based marketing firm that specialises in branding and marketing for the world’s cities, districts, projects, and destinations, has ranked Toronto as the 24th most desirable city in the world to live in. Cities that had populations of more than a million people (across the world) are ranked on this list. Rankings were determined by factors including safety, outdoor space, labour force participation, GDP, nightlife, universities, attractions, weather, and more.

Toronto ranked first among all Canadian cities. It was accoladed with good marks for its strong economic growth, which was supported by foreign investment and immigration. It is stated in the study that the community is exceptionally varied, with half of the city’s residents being foreign-born. Toronto is said to be one of the world’s most educated cities, thus it received good rankings for education as well. The 24th position is nevertheless a drop from the 2022 report, in which Toronto held the 18th position.

For the seventh year in a row, London won the title of best city, with Kyiv receiving an honorary top rank in recognition of the suffering the Ukrainian capital has faced because of the Russian invasion during the last year. Notably, St. Petersburg and Moscow have both been eliminated off the list, even though Moscow, the capital of Russia, came in fourth position in 2022. High rankings for international investment, opulent real estate, tourism, and a vibrant nightlife were responsible for London’s score. Additionally in the top 10 cities were Paris, New York, Tokyo, Dubai, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Singapore, and Amsterdam.

The other four Canadian cities on the list were Montreal (ranked 57), Calgary (ranked 65), Vancouver (ranked 69), and Ottawa (ranked 96). According to the report, immigrant populations are substantial in all four cities. While Calgary was ranked for having a strong GDP and a youthful population, Montreal was ranked highly for culture. Due to a cheaper cost of living, Ottawa made the list while Vancouver scored well considering its natural surroundings.

The highest immigration goals ever announced by Canada

Aimed to accept 500,000 new permanent residents annually by 2025, Canada has unveiled its Immigration Levels Plan 2023–2025. Records established in 2021 (at 405,000) and approximately 432,000 in 2022, are being surpassed by the new objectives. Because of its standing for stability, safety, and tolerance, Canada is frequently considered a desirable country to migrate to. A large population of immigrants settled and contributed to its economy, variety, and culture, which helps explain why it was ranked so highly on the list.

More than 60% of new permanent residents as per the strategy were expected to enter the country via a route that promoted economic immigration, such as the Express Entry system. As a growing portion of the country’s elderly population enters retirement age, Canada urgently required skilled workers to fill employment shortages in its labour force. Canada counts on immigration to maintain a healthy economy since the birth rate is low to address the labour shortfall.

What is Express Entry (EE) & how does it work?

Express Entry is an electronic selection system used by the Federal as well as Provincial governments of Canada [to select], as well as designated Canadian employers [to nominate] candidates for Canadian permanent residence under three of its popular economic [skilled] immigration programs:

Candidates eligible for any of the above programs are given a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the Express Entry Pool. It is based on their Core/Human capital factors such as age, work experience, education, and language ability in English and/or French, etc. And, based on scores, candidates are periodically invited (or nominated) for permanent residence.
