Saskatchewan and Ontario are a couple out of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. They have been inhabited for thousands of years by multiple indigenous groups. With the acute labour shortage that Canada is experiencing, Ontario and Saskatchewan are estimated to be the most affected.

According to the monthly overview of data, the number of job vacancies in Ontario increased by over 7.2% (over 375,000) and in Saskatchewan by over 12.1% (over 26,500). Meantime, while there was slight to no change in the other provinces.

Reports according to Statistics Canada show that there were 1.0 jobless persons on average for every open position in Canada, which is comparatively lower to the reports from August which was 1.3 jobless persons. The ratio fell to 0.7 in September for British Columbia and Quebec, the two provinces known to have the greatest job vacancy rates, after their rise to 1.0 during the month of August. The province with the greatest unemployment-to-job vacancy ratio (3.1) in September was Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • The employer is actively looking for eligible candidates outside the company to fill the position.

Immigration is at the forefront of the fight against the labour crisis in Canada. As an increasing number of the country’s ageing population enters retirement, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continue to take action to address the impending labour shortfall. With a target of 500,000 immigrants set to arrive by 2025, Canada has outlined plans for a significant rise in the number of immigrants entering the nation. Read our related article.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser stated that there are a million jobs available in the Canadian economy where immigration already accounts for nearly all their labour force growth, he also adds that the economic potential of the country cannot be maximized if immigration is not embraced.
