Canadian Passport Ranked as One of The Best Passports in The World

Canada’s passport ranks seventh in a new global list of the most powerful passports, according to a ranking by the global consultancy Henley & Partners. The Henley Passport Index ranks passport strength based on visa-free access to destinations, including those with visa on arrival, visitor permits, or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Destinations requiring a visa or e-visa are not included. The index uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), along with research from Henley & Partners. Canadian passport holders can travel to 188 destinations without requiring a visa, placing Canada on par with Malta and Poland, which also share the seventh spot. The ranking is determined by the number of destinations accessible to passport holders without needing a visa in advance.

For the first time since Henley & Partners started publishing its global rankings in 2006, the Canadian passport has surpassed the US passport. In 2025, the US dropped to ninth place, two spots lower than its position last year at seventh. Meanwhile, the Canadian passport held steady in seventh, an improvement from 2023 when it was ranked eighth.

In 2025, Canada benefited from visa-free access to Egypt and Brazil, while Gabon and Togo introduced visa requirements for Canadian travellers. Despite maintaining its seventh-place rank, Canada has fallen three positions over the past decade, down from fourth place in 2015.

How can one apply for a Canadian passport?

To get a Canadian passport, you must first become a Canadian citizen. If born in Canada, you're automatically a Canadian citizen. For those not born in Canada, the process involves obtaining Permanent Residency (PR) visa, meeting residency requirements, filing taxes, passing a citizenship test, and taking the citizenship oath. The entire process of becoming a Canadian citizen through naturalization takes over three years.
