The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has selected a new professional entity to conduct Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for architects who are planning to migrate to Canada. As a condition for eligibility in various economic permanent residency programs, applicants need to validate the genuineness and equivalence of their foreign educational qualifications to Canadian benchmarks. This can be fulfilled by securing an ECA from a versatile organization or professional body authorized by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
As of May 20, 2024, Canada’s minister for immigration has tasked the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) with granting ECAs to individuals choosing "Architect" (NOC 21200) as their primary or intended occupation. These ECAs from the CACB will evaluate how foreign educational credentials compare to the Canadian standard necessary for practicing architecture. Moreover, these ECAs play a recognized role in the licensing process for architects.
Meantime, it is important to note that if a candidate’s occupation is classified as an "Architect" (NOC 21200) and the candidate possesses an ECA certificate issued by another designated ECA organization before October 31, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts it as long as it remains valid. Further in-depth information about ECAs, including the procedure and timeline for acquiring an ECA from the CACB has been made available.
