IRCC has stared accepting Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core exam for all immigration routes, except the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This implies that individuals applying through the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), candidates in Express Entry managed programs, and those requiring a language test for any other Canadian immigration purposes (excluding the SDS) — such as applying for Canadian Permanent Residency — cab now take the PTE Core exam.

The PTE Core stands as the third choice for an English language proficiency test available to candidates applying for permanent residency. The other two options include the CELPIP General Test (English) and the IELTS General Training (English).

What is the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core?

The PTE Core is a computer-based language assessment designed to evaluate general English proficiency for Canadian immigration purposes. It measures skills in English speaking, writing, reading, and listening within a two-hour timeframe and is administered at numerous testing centers worldwide, totaling over 400 locations. To ensure fairness, both human and AI scoring methods are utilized, with results typically available within two days. The test consists of three sections: Speaking and writing (50 minutes), Reading (30 minutes), and Listening (30 minutes).

Tests are scored on a scale of 0 to 90, with 90 being the highest possible score, for example, CLB 7 corresponds to a PTE score in the range of 60 to 68 for reading, 69 to 78 for writing, 60 to 70 in listening, and 68 to 75 in speaking.

The introduction of PTE Core has expanded the options for language tests [English and French] accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to a total of five. These tests include:

  • CELPIP General Test (English)

  • IELTS General Training (English)

  • PTE Core (English)

  • TEF Canada (French)

  • TCF Canada (French)

All five tests evaluate language proficiency across reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Depending on the immigration program candidates apply for, they may need to meet different proficiency criteria in these areas.

For instance, applicants of Express Entry-managed programs must achieve varying scores depending on the program chosen. Under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), candidates need to attain a minimum CLB level of 7 across all language skills. However, for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), they must achieve at least a CLB level 5 in speaking and listening and a level 4 in reading and writing. Similarly, candidates applying under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) must meet either a minimum CLB level 7 or level 5 proficiency across all language skills, based on the National Occupation Classification (NOC) skill level of their job.
