IELTS (general) writing task 1 includes three different types of letters. It contains informal letters, semi-formal letters, and formal letters. Semi-formal letters can be used to write business, complaints, requests, and job applications. When writing semi-formal letters, you must use appropriate vocabulary, tone, and knowledge of the situation. This article will provide you information needed to write semi-formal letters.
A semi-formal letter must be addressed to someone with whom you have a professional or commercial relationship and know their name. They might be your professors, business partners, accountants, etc. Additionally, you have to address them by their last name: Dear Mr. Dave, Dear Mrs. Gregory.
Semi-formal letters can be applied in two different contexts.
There is no clear definition of a semi-formal letter, other than that it is between formal and informal. Similarly, semi-formal language lacks definiteness because it falls between formal and informal language.
