Starting September 30, Alberta has changed the process for issuing Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for candidates in the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) pathways.
Alberta advises that candidates cannot create a Worker EOI if they have an existing Worker EOI or Entrepreneur EOI or a draft or active AAIP application. The province will not conduct worker stream draws until mid to late October. Therefore, applicants should not rush to submit their work.
The EOI points grid, similar to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), will rank candidates based on various human capital factors such as education, language ability, work experience (additional points provided for job experience in Alberta), age, and family connections in the province. Candidates with higher scores are more likely to be selected for provincial nomination.
From September 30, candidates must submit a Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) via the AAIP portal and complete an online form. Those who submit an EOI will be placed in a Worker Stream pool for consideration, with no fee.
Alberta Worker Streams
In the month of June, the province announced that only a limited number of applications would be accepted at a time, with all applications closing at the end of each month if a target was met. Alberta modified the application process for Worker streams earlier this year to manage demand and meet labour market goals.
The approach aimed to balance Alberta's 9,750 PNP nominations for 2024 with processing times. Affected programs include:
The Alberta Opportunity Stream, which was in high demand this year between February and June, was paused by the province to address its current inventory and focus on filling labour shortages in sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism, and hospitality. The province aimed to provide applicants with multiple opportunities to apply and access the program year-round.
