When conducting draws in the Express Entry system, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) utilize a points-based selection system known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). During these rounds, IRCC:

  • Determine the type of selection round that is to be conducted,
  • Establish the number of candidates to be invited. That is, the number of invitations to be invited,

What are the different types of Express Entry draws?

Throughout the year, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts various rounds of invitations to select candidates for economic migration to Canada. They are:

General rounds of invitations: in General invitation rounds, IRCC invites top-ranking candidates from the pool who meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three programs under Express Entry. These three programs under Express Entry are:

Program-specific rounds of invitations: in invitation rounds tailored to specific programs, IRCC chooses top-ranking candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for a particular Express Entry program. For instance, if IRCC organizes a round specifically for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), only candidates eligible for the PNP would be invited.

Category-based rounds of invitations: in invitation rounds based on categories, the Minister specifies a category to target a specific economic goal. Afterwards, IRCC invites top-ranking candidates from the Express Entry pool who meet the requirements for this category.

To join the pool, candidates must satisfy the eligibility criteria for one of the three types managed through Express Entry. Category-based rounds enhance general and program-specific rounds by inviting top-ranking candidates who can aid in accomplishing particular economic objectives.

IRCC holds Category based round based on:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare occupations
  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations

Invitations to apply for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Program may be issued based on the above mentioned round of invitations.
