Recognized as one of the most prominent language tests in the world, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized English language proficiency test that assesses the language abilities of a non-native speaker. It is jointly owned and managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English. The test is accepted globally and plays a pivotal role in the immigration process. Many government departments use IELTS as a part of the application process. Therefore, if applying for permanent residency in Canada, one must take up General IELTS which meets the standards of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) and CLB (Canada Language Benchmarks).

IELTS’ Speaking Module (in brief)

The speaking module is the only test in IELTS which is conducted face-to-face with the examiner. It could be nerve-wracking for certain test takers, if they are not aware what is to be expected in the test. The duration of the speaking test is between 11 to 14 minutes and consists of 3 sections. The test is outlined to assess an individual’s vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar. In order to prepare for the speaking module, it is important to understand the format of the test. Look at the table below to understand the 3 parts the test is divided into.

Part 1 of the test deals with general questions on topics such as study, hobbies, friends, family, etc. The examiner will try to understand if one can communicate the opinions related to general or everyday topics. In part 2, the examiner will hand a task card with a topic written on it. The test taker is allotted 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to talk about the topic. The focus here is to evaluate the ability to talk about a particular topic at length. Finally, Part 3 is a discussion with the examiner. The test taker is assessed on their ability to answer general and abstract questions related to part 2. They are required to analyse, justify, and speculate the answers in detail.

Given below are some time-tested suggestions!

The speaking test requires excellent practice. Here are a few tips that will come in handy.

  • Practice speaking: One can become a fluent speaker through daily practice. Find a talking buddy (a friend, relative or, colleague) with whom one can communicate every day and practice with fluent speakers.
  • Focus on pronunciation: Rather than focusing on accent while speaking, shift the focus on using the correct pronunciation as it is one of the points of assessment in speaking test. Candidate can improve pronunciation through active listening.
  • Avoid repetition: Do not parrot the question asked by the examiner. Instead, learn to rephrase or paraphrase when start answering.
  • Expand vocabulary: As a part of everyday practice, learn new vocabulary through reading book, articles, magazines. Etc which will show the examiner that candidate is confident speaker with a wide range of vocabulary.
  • Practice answering common questions: Review and practice answering common IELTS speaking questions. This will help one feel more prepared and confident on test day.
  • Avoid one-word answers: Keep in mind that candidate is been assessed on speaking ability. Therefore, respond well. Answer in five or six sentences.
  • Watch pace: Be conscious of pace while speaking. Try not to speak too fast or take long pauses while speaking.
  • Record Oneself: When practicing for part 2, record answers and replay the audio to identify areas for improvement, such as pronunciation, grammar, and fluency.
