IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a language test available for anyone who wish to migrate to Canada. IELTS is accepted and approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as a means to evaluate a person’s English language proficiency. The four modules of IELTS are speakingreadingwriting, and listening. The test taker must appear before an examiner who is IELTS certified, whether they are taking the test on paper or on computer.

The speaking module consists of 3 sections and will be over in 11 to 14 minutes, usually. Although it is the shortest test in IELTS, it is as important as other tests. Due to their dread of taking in-person exams, many people don’t get the required results. Because to this aspect, many get nervous and are not able to completely express themselves. Let us understand how to tackle the speaking test.

Avoid these 5 mistakes in the speaking section

Short and uncommunicative answers: remember that you are attempting a speaking test, so make sure that your answers are not too short or brief. If the examiner finds your answers to be short, they may prompt you with more questions.

Repetition of words: when a test taker keeps replicating the same words over and over again, it indicates that fact that the test taker does not possess a good range of vocabulary.

Frequent self-correction: if you have made a mistake, try not to correct the mistakes too often and show that you have made an error while answering.

Over scrutinizing: thinking way too much about the questions may lead to giving wrong answers which in turn leads to losing scores.

Proper grammar and pronunciation: Although spoken language overlooks language rules, be mindful that you are attempting an international language test.

Follow these tips!

  • Be responsive and answer in at least five to six sentences.
  • Practice regularly, which will help you become a good orator. You could self-practice by speaking to yourself on the mirror.
  • Speak fluently to show that you have good speaking ability.
  • Try to understand the question and reflect on how to give interesting answers.
  • Use grammatically correct sentences and learn proper pronunciation of words to show you are a confident speaker.
