IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English Language proficiency test that is trusted by the Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) to assess the language abilities of a non-native speaker. Recognized as one of the most prominent language tests in the world, an IELTS test result is indispensable to migrate to Canada.

There are 2 types of IELTS test – the General Training (GT) test as well as Academic test. While the latter, as the name suggests, is attended by students seeking higher education in an English-speaking country, the former is attended by individuals looking to migrate. Whichever be the test, there are 2 ways one could attend the IELTS test. They could take a computer-based test, OR paper-based exam.

Many myths surround the IELTS exam and one must not believe everything that they are told regarding the exam. Through this article, we attempt to demystify some of these myths.

Myth #1 | You should write more than the specified word count

It is essential to be aware of the word count requirement with regard to the writing section as scores will be deducted if you do not meet it. However, if you are a confident writer, you can exceed the word count requirement but doing so will not earn you more points. The word count limit set for Task 1 is 150 and for Task 2 is 250. Pay close attention to the question and ensure to address the main points while utilizing proper grammar and appropriate vocabulary.

Myth #2 | You should talk with British or American accent

That is an incorrect statement. In the IELTS speaking module, it is not necessary to put on an accent as the courteous examiners are well versed to comprehend different dialects. Be sure to take your time to speak at a natural pace and with clarity during the speaking test.  Marks will not be deducted if you ask the examiner to repeat the question that you didn’t hear. You are allowed to make such a request.

Myth #3 | The Speaking test is partial/biased as humans mark it

As a realistic reflection of how you communicate in everyday life, your speaking test will be conducted by a human examiner rather than a computer. You prepare for future interactions by taking the IELTS speaking test.

The test takers are judged impartially by the IELTS examiners. However, the point of focus is effective communication. Speaking tests are conducted to help and prepare the test taker to handle different types of conversations that may happen in real life however, If the test is run by a machine or artificial intelligence, this might not be achievable. Machine learning algorithms used by artificial intelligence have been found to be biased.

Myth #4 | Some IELTS test centres are better than others

The test scores for all the IELTS tests are evaluated impartially by a certified IELTS examiner who is trained to adhere to the set standards when assessing a test taker’s English skill. Consequently, all tests are reviewed equally irrespective of the location of the test centre.

Myth #5 | Computer-based test is difficult than Paper-based

The two modes of taking the test in IELTS are Paper or computer and it is a choice that can be made by the test taker to complete the test according to their convenience. However, the content and questions remain the same for both computer and paper-based test. As a result, neither is simpler than the other. If a test taker is accustomed to taking the written test or is proficient with computer, then do what suits you the best as IELTS offers both possibilities.
