In 2022, Canada processed 437,120 permanent resident (PR) applications. This surpassed its planned target of 431,645 people for the year. This is the second consecutive year that Canada has exceeded its immigration target, with the number of immigrants in 2022 being the third highest in Canadian history, after the years 1913 and 2021.

In 2020, Canada’s intake of new permanent residents was limited to 184,000 due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. However, in 2022, economic immigration programs were given priority and were the main source of new immigrants to Canada. These economic programs include worker programsskilled migration programsProvincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)temporary resident, as well as permanent resident pathways, and together they accounted for 58.5% of all new Canadian permanent residents in 2022.

Tracking Canada’s 2022 Immigration Trends: Monthly Arrivals of New Permanent Residents

Canada received no less than 23,000 new permanent residents in each month of 2022. The figures below show the precise number of new Canadian permanent residents who immigrated to Canada each month during the past year.

Analyzing Canada’s 2022 Immigration Patterns: Breakdown of New Permanent Residents by Class

The number of new permanent residents who arrived in Canada through economic-class immigration programs was 256,000, which is 5.8% more than the target set in the 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan. However, the number of new permanent residents under the family class of immigration programs, which was 97,165, fell short of the target of 105,000 set in the same plan. The family class immigration group accounted for 22.2% of all newly landed Canadian permanent residents, while the government had originally aimed for this group to make up just over 24% of all new permanent residents in 2022.

75,330 refugees and protected persons were resettled in Canada, making up 17.2% of all new Canadian permanent residents. Although this number is higher than the previous year (60,115 in 2021), it fell just short of the target set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for this immigration class, which was 76,565 people or 17.7% of all Canadian permanent residents. The remaining approximately 8,500 new Canadian permanent residents were classified by IRCC as coming to Canada under the “All Other Immigration” category.

In comparison to the prior year, there have been notable changes to the top source nations for new Canadian permanent residents, with Afghanistan and Syria replacing Brazil and South Korea in the top 10. India continues to be the main country from which immigrants come to Canada, with China coming in second, much like last year. Nonetheless, the percentage of immigrants from these two nations has declined from the numbers of 32% and 8%, respectively, from the previous year.

Below is a list of the top 10 countries that were the biggest sources of Canadian permanent residents in 2022, along with the number of immigrants from each country and the percentage that each country contributed to Canada’s total number of new PRs.
