Some Recommended Best Practices | Your IELTS Speaking Test

Universities, businesses, and governmental authorities in many countries accept IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as a valid test score. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts IELTS (also, CELPIP) as valid test for English when applying for Permanent Residence in Canada, as well as studies. Professional organisations, immigration authorities, and other governmental organisations all acknowledge it. Each year, over three million people take the exam. The exam evaluates an individual’s SpeakingWritingListening, and Reading skills. However, this article shines light on some tried and tested practice methods to excel in the speaking module.

IELTS Speaking Session in Brief

The speaking section remains the same in IELTS GT as well as IELTS Academic. You need to take IELTS GT only if you are migrating to Canada as a permanent resident. A person’s vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar will all be assessed using the test’s outline. The speaking test lasts between 11 and 14 minutes and is divided into three parts. Part 1 of the test includes open-ended questions on topics including studies, interests, friends, and family. Here, the examiner will look to see if the candidate can articulate thoughts on routine or everyday topics. In the IELTS, only the speaking test is administered face-to-face with the examiner.

The examiner will give you a task card (also known as a cue card) in Part 2 of the test with a specific topic. The test-taker has two minutes to address the subject and one minute to get ready. Here, determining one’s ability to engage in a comprehensive discussion of a certain topic is the main goal.

A discussion with the examiner takes place in Part 3. Here, the test-taker’s capacity to reply to general and abstract questions (related to part 2) is assessed. Only the IELTS speaking test is carried out face-to-face with the examiner.

Here are some recommended best practices!

  • Keep an eye on your pace when speaking. Try not to speak too quickly or with long pauses.
  • By regularly engaging in speaking practise, you can develop fluency.
  • Review and practise answering common IELTS speaking questions. On test day, this will make you feel more prepared and confident.
  • Keep in mind that your ability to communicate is being evaluated. As a result, respond effectively and in five to six sentences.
  • Learn new vocabulary as part of your daily practise by reading books, articles, and journals. etc., which will demonstrate to the examiner that the candidate is a confident speaker with a diverse vocabulary.
  • Do not simply repeat the examiner’s question. Instead, learn to modify or paraphrase your responses.
