Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, was celebrated all around the world by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. Alberta, which is home to diverse population of various cultures, had its own share of events and celebrations during the festival.
The word Diwali or Deepawali is derived from the word ‘Diya’ or ‘Deepa’ which means lamp. Diya or Deepa stood for the victory of good over evil, jubilation over despair, and light over darkness. The festival is celebrated during autumn season with families, friends, and communities gathering for diverse food and a spectacular show of fireworks. Sweets are distributed and homes are decked with vibrant rangoli and fabrics. Puja (prayer) to the goddess Lakshmi is performed which brings prosperity, love, and good fortune into the home.
For Sikhs, it is Bandi Chhor Divas or the Day of Liberation as this day marks the return of Guru Hargobind Ji.
