A report from Henley & Partners released on January 11th ranks Canada’s passport as the 7th most powerful passport in the world.  Canadian Passport holders can now travel to 185 countries including 48 that require a visa only upon arrival.

What makes a passport powerful?

A strong passport is one that entitles the holder to all consular services in times of need from as many nations as feasible. The passports are ranked based on a ” visa-free score,” which provides a point to each nation that passport holders can visit without a visa, with a visa on arrival, or by receiving Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

A passport can be rated better or worse based on the range of visa-free travels it allows its holder. A passport that gives its holder access to more countries is more powerful and hence more desirable. In this regard, the Canadian Passport has been rising in ranks.

About the Henley Passport Index:

The Henley Passport Index is the first and most authoritative ranking of all passports in the world, based on the number of countries to which their holders can travel without a visa. According to the press release, the index “is enhanced by a significant, continuous study by the Henley & Partners Research Department” and uses official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The Henley Passport Index which is published every quarter compares 199 passports for 227 travel locations. Ranks are assigned to the top 111 passports that represent global mobility.
