IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most trusted standardized English assessment test to check the proficiency level of a non-native speaker who aspires to move to a country like Canada. IELTS band scores are used to measure the English language proficiency level of an individual. The test is accepted globally and plays a vital role in the immigration process. The Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) requires an individual who wants a permanent residency in Canada to meet the standards as part of the immigration process.

Computer test OR Paper test – which one should you take?

The two modes the test candidates can choose from are paper-based & computer-based. Many prefer computer-based over the paper-based test for one reason that computer-based test results are published in just 3-5 days after the test. Many test takers are eager to find out the results and do not wish to wait for 14 days for the results to come out which is the case for paper based.

Irrespective of paper or computer-based test, the test taker needs to understand the basic criteria while choosing the test mode that is good handwriting for paper -based test and good typing speed for computer-based test. The content and the score (0-9) remain the same whether one chooses paper or computer-based test.

The 4 Modules of the IELTS Exam

In IELTS, the test taker is assessed on four language acquisition skills.  Firstly, the listening module which has 4 sections to be completed within 40 minutes. The test taker needs to answer 40 questions in this module. The most important tip to keep in mind is the ability to understand different accents which will help in answering questions quickly and easily.

Secondly, the reading module which has 3 sections to be completed within 60 minutes. This test also has 40 questions with each carrying 1 mark. The test taker needs to have good reading ability to get through the reading test and the test taker must read to understand.
