Canadian cities are among the best places in the world to live, considering their friendly ethnic cultures along with distinct weather across the four seasons. Therefore, one of the important aspects to keep in mind when you are planning to migrate is taking up a language test. You must produce language test results from an authorized organization for Canadian immigration. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Programme (CELPIP) are the two current authorized English test providers. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not have a preferred test. You can select the test that is more convenient for you to take because the results of both tests are equally valid for migration. Any language test you take must have results from within the last two years (24 months) for it to be considered valid. In IELTS, the test taker must learn to manage time wisely to successfully complete the task at hand. However, many find it challenging to complete the Reading test on time. Keep reading more for some excellent tips.

Overview of the Reading Module

The general reading test is designed to evaluate a broad variety of reading abilities. There are a total of 40 questions in the module’s three sections, each for one mark, and you have 60 minutes to finish the test. As a result, test takers must allocate 20 minutes to each section.  Section 1 of the test contains short texts about everyday life in an English-speaking country; section 2 focuses on work-related issues like job hunting, company policies, and so on, and, section 3 is usually time-consuming and complex, with topics taken from guidebooks, newspapers, advertisements, and so on. Gist reading, thorough reading, reading for the primary concept, and understanding a writer’s thinking are among the abilities put to the test in general reading.

IELTS Reading Test Preparation Tips

Since time management is one of the key elements for test takers, you could successfully put to use to manage time effectively and successfully complete the Reading test.

Understand the test structure: passages for the General and Academic sections of the IELTS test are taken from sources such as books, journals, newspapers, handbooks, and advertisements. So, to improve your IELTS Reading abilities, become familiar with a variety of books and tests before the test. It will assist you in ‘time management’ and help you stay ahead of any last-minute surprises!

Study about the various types of questions: get acquainted with various kinds of questions asked in the test and prepare to answer them. There are about 14 types that one must practice. Always read the questions first, then the passages, to efficiently manage your time. Understand what is being asked in each question. Additionally, if you can’t answer a question in a minute or two, move on to the next.

Apply the scanning and skimming methodswhile scanning is the technique for locating important or specific information without reading every word, skimming is the method of reading quickly. If you want to use this approach, read the question carefully and identify the essential information you’ll need. It will help you find information faster. Then, read each passage carefully if necessary. Otherwise, you may not understand the information at hand correctly.

Utilize context-related clues: context clues are information hints that help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. They are the words and phrases that surround a word and help to explain its meaning. It is critical to utilise this strategy since it allows you to simply understand the text and identify the answers.

Organize your time effectively: be mindful that you have 60 minutes to complete the 40 questions. Given that the third passage is longer and more complex than the first two, you should devote a little more time to it during the IELTS General Reading exam than you should to the first two.

Boost your vocabulary: many IELTS Reading questions centre around recognizing synonyms and paraphrasing texts for answers. The exam so evaluates both your vocabulary and comprehension skills. As a result, expanding your vocabulary can help you find the right answers much faster.

Simultaneously transfer your answers: another key aspect is to remember that you must transfer your answers simultaneously, and there is no extra time for this in the IELTS reading part. It would be beneficial if you first solved each passage and then wrote the answers on the question paper. Then, once you’ve completed solving the passage, immediately transfer your answers to the solution sheet. This will enable you to save time and stop you from hurrying at the last minute.

Read and practice more frequently: become accustomed to reading lengthy materials or practice sample papers. Additionally, it would help you become familiar with difficult vocabulary and phrases. Make sure you’re using reliable resources as you study.
