Does IRCC Prefer a Specific Language Test?

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) approve several language tests for immigration and citizenship purposes. These tests evaluate an individual’s ability to communicate in English and/or French, depending on the language requirements for their immigration or citizenship application. The test results are used as a measure of an individual’s language proficiency and are required as part of the application process. The language tests approved by IRCC are:

In addition to these tests, IRCC has recently announced that it will be accepting the Pearson Test of English (PTE) as a new language proficiency test for immigration and citizenship purposes. We had published an article on this matter, before. Read full article here.

Does IRCC has a preferred language test?

It is a myth, and you will understand when you learn about the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB). IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) does not have a preferred language test because the scores or bands the candidate secures in any test [IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, etc.] are first converted to their corresponding Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. And it is the CLB level of the grades or bands obtained, that decides the candidate’s immigration scores. In other words, the name of the test hardly matters.

Read this article to learn more about CLB.

By accepting multiple tests, IRCC aims to ensure that its language proficiency requirements are accessible to a wide range of applicants, regardless of their language background or preferences. This approach also allows IRCC to assess an applicant’s language proficiency accurately and fairly, based on standardized and recognized language proficiency tests.

The CLB framework measures an individual’s language proficiency on a scale of 1 to 12 in four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Each language test approved by IRCC is aligned with the CLB framework, and the test scores or bands can be converted to CLB levels to provide a standardized measure of language proficiency.

By accepting multiple tests and converting the scores or bands to CLB levels, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada)can ensure that its language proficiency requirements are fair and consistent for all applicants, regardless of which language test they choose to take. This approach allows IRCC to assess an applicant’s language proficiency accurately and consistently, based on a recognized and standardized framework.

What is Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)?

CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) is a standardized framework used to measure an individual’s proficiency in English or French as a second language, in Canada. It provides a consistent and objective way to evaluate language skills and assess the language proficiency of individuals for various purposes, including immigration, education, and employment.

The CLB framework measures language proficiency on a scale of 1 to 12 in four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Each level on the scale represents a different degree of language proficiency, with Level 1 being the lowest and Level 12 being the highest.

The CLB framework is widely used in Canada for assessing the language proficiency of newcomers to Canada, as well as for providing language training and support. It is also used by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) as the standard to assess language proficiency for immigration and citizenship.

The CLB framework is designed to be flexible and adaptable to different contexts and situations. It is regularly updated and revised to reflect changes in language use and to ensure that it remains relevant and effective. The CLB framework is an important tool for promoting language learning and integration in Canada, and for supporting the success of newcomers to the country.
