Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province. Just about 224 km from tip to tip, the province is dotted with lovely villages and beautiful sandy beaches. The Honorable Ernie Hudson, Minister of Health and Wellness of PEI , and the Honorable Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island, announced more than $8 million worth of financial incentives on October 17th to retain healthcare professionals and fill essential openings across the system.

In exchange for a one-year return-in-service agreement, the Retention Incentive Program offered financial incentives which stabilized the healthcare workforce and retained nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, paramedics, and registered care workers.

Rewards for retention consisted of:

  • $3,500 for registered nurses and nurse practitioners
  • $3,000 for licensed practical nurses and paramedics
  • $2,500 for residential care workers, home support workers and patient care workers

Medical professionals were elated to provide a one-year return-in-service agreement and were eligible for incentives. Both full-time and part-time employees were qualified for the incentive as it was not particular to any facility or unit.

Retirement Retention Program that offered a reward of $5,000 for one year of continuing service in important positions within the healthcare system was introduced. Through the Priority Vacancy Program that was put into place, an additional $3,000 financial incentive was given to fill out the vacant important positions throughout the system. People could benefit from these incentives in addition to the retention incentives. It was anticipated that 190 vacancies across the system would be covered by the priority vacancy incentive scheme.

All rewards over one year were calculated in 1950 hours. From September 2022, the Retention Incentive Program was implemented retroactively.

The premier of Prince Edward Island, honorable Dennis King pledged to work against the problems faced by the healthcare industry with the help of healthcare leadership and unions and further stated that although it was only a small part of the broader solution of stabilizing the healthcare system however the incentives have also helped retain the healthcare professionals who worked diligently to offer Islanders high-quality healthcare services.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Honorable Ernie Hudson added that the health care workers are essential to provide the proper care that the islanders require, he also added that the initiatives encouraged highly qualified employees to stay in Prince Edward Island’s healthcare system and to help continue improve the quality of life of Islanders.

Chief Executive Officer of Health PEI Dr. Michael Gardam stated that the sick, injured and support-needy Islanders were cared for by healthcare professionals who had put in long hours to deliver healthcare services across the province every day and to maintain and rebuild their healthcare system which was crucial to keep exceptional professionals on board. Moreover, with this announcement the provincial government and Health PEI have demonstrated their dedication to appreciate and value their healthcare professionals.
