On October 11, the government of Saskatchewan and Canada announced a $2.59 million investment to support one-time awards in order to help regulated childcare centers and group family childcare homes in the province to attract and keep licensed Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and assistants.

The education minister, Dustin Duncan stated that the government of Saskatchewan is dedicated to assist the growing province of Saskatchewan in luring and retaining more group family childcare assistants and early childhood educators. Mr. Duncan emphasized the significance of Saskatchewan ECEs to provide their youngest students with high-quality early education and care, and these funds were intended to assist promote and draw more professionals into the field.

To help with each facility’s particular workforce needs such as, one-time investments into benefit or pension funds, signing bonuses, or attending career fairs, Saskatchewan-regulated childcare centers, and group family childcare homes received a one-time grant of $145 per regulated childcare space for children up to the age of six. The Early Learning and Child Care Workforce Enhancement Grant are funded by the Canada-Saskatchewan Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.

Canada’s Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, Karina Gould desired the best outcome for every child in the country and stated that the funding assists in ensuring that childcare providers can continue to offer high-quality, affordable, flexible, and inclusive early learning and childcare across the province even while efforts are made to increase the number of childcare spaces.

The Ministry of Education sent out more details and application materials for the Early Learning and Childcare Workforce Enhancement Grants to provincial group family childcare homes and childcare facilities on October 11th.

According to the executive director of the Saskatchewan Early Childhood Association, Georgia Lavallee as Saskatchewan progresses in creating an ELCC system, the announcement represents another step in giving resources to the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) sector and with the aid of this award Saskatchewan’s early childhood educators can be strengthened.

A wider endeavor by the government of Saskatchewan and Canada to establish a national early learning and childcare system includes the Early Learning and Child Care Workforce Enhancement Grant.

The province committed an expenditure of $5.4 million last month, while the government announced free post-secondary training for ECEs in August 2022. These are just a few of the measures taken to guarantee that all Saskatchewan children have access to high-quality early childhood education programs and services.
