The Canadian province of Alberta allures visitors & tourists from all over the world with its stunning mountains, ski trails, museums, and distinctive festivals. The government of Alberta has worked on making it easier for internationally educated nurses to be licensed and begin work in their province to improve health-care capacity.

The Advanced Education, Health and Labour Department, and the Immigration Department joined hands and made plans to launch a three-pronged plan to help internationally educated nurses. The departments mentioned that they are expanding nurse bridging programs and clinical placements while also streamlining the regulatory process and creating a new online platform that will help nurses navigate the process.

Internationally educated nurses have faced long wait times and get little financial support to be licensed for work in Alberta but, with a well-coordinated plan the needs of the health care system will be well supported. The advanced education department invested $3.5 million to expand educational opportunities for internationally educated nurses.

Jason Kenney, Premier of Alberta stated that Alberta was the best place to live, work and raise a family in Canada and with the huge global demand for health-care workers the strategic approach  helped in attracting more highly skilled and qualified nurses into the health care system while also being reminded of the numerous advantages of living in the province.

In January 2023, the department of advanced education agreed to work with post-secondary institutions to increase the number of seats in the bridge programmes. The most recent plans featured new scholarships and bridging programmes to help with the cost of obtaining an Alberta nursing licence. The program, which is a component of a much bigger government project, made sure that eligible people who wanted to enter regulated professions and designated occupations didn’t experience unfair procedures when trying to comply with the Fair Registration Practices Act. The establishment of the Fair Registration Practices Office was also made possible by the government initiative.

Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Advanced Education mentioned that the internationally educated nurses are unable to perform at their skill level because of the cost and wait time of current bridging programs and removing these barriers have helped the nurses practice their trade and better themselves for the health care system.

As per Tim Rahilly, president and vice-chancellor of Mount Royal University stated that the health care system required nurses and the internationally educated nurses who immigrate to Canada would be a main source for untapped knowledge and skills. He also added that the university contributed to help internationally educated nurses to bring their resiliency, determination, patience, work ethics, and cultural understanding to the province.
