Take Parents & Grandparents with You to Canada

Canada allows an individual to bring their parents as visitors or sponsor them for permanent residence. Since the wait period for parental sponsorships are prolonged, some bring in their parents as visitors while they wait for the sponsorship application to be processed.

Primarily, there are 2 options to bring your parents and grandparents to Canada:

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP)

In October, Canada’s Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) invitations will be issued to those hoping to sponsor their parents and grandparents for immigration to Canada. The government has asked applicants to be informed that 23,100 invitations will be issued with the intention of accepting up to 15,000 completed applications, Applicants are advised to note that the IRCC has issued a notification stating that the invitations will only be issued to candidates who had already submitted the interest to sponsor form during the intake period in 2020. However, there were 155,313 potential sponsors who had submitted the form in 2020 and are waiting for an invitation. Hence, there will be a chance in million for new candidates to submit a sponsor form in 2022.

Who does it work? Parents and grandparents can be sponsored for their migration to Canada. If the parent or grandparent has a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, they become dependants on the application and can immigrate with the applicant. In the case of divorced parent/grandparent, separate applications must be submitted for the sponsorship.

Applicants will be eligible to sponsor their parents and grandparents if the following requirements are met:

  1. Must hold an invitation issued by IRCC
  2. Must be least 18 years old
  3. Must reside in Canada
  4. Must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  5. If the applicant has enough money to support the people they want to sponsor with proof of income or they have a spouse or common-law partner co-sign to combine their incomes.

And lastly, meet all the other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.

Super visa

How does it work? It is a visa that allows for several entries for up to ten years. With a Super Visa, an applicant (parent/ grandparent) can spend up to five years at a time visiting their kids or grandchildren. The length of their stay will be confirmed by the border services officer when they enter Canada. A super visa has several prerequisites, one of which is health insurance.
