Displaced Afghans | Canada Offers to Accommodate 20,000

As Afghanistan faces a deep crisis leaving many Afghans vulnerable and displaced, the government of Canada has expressed a deep concern over the deteriorating condition of Afghanistan and has announced the expansion of the settlement program to accommodate the Afghans fleeing their country. The government is working continually to ensure the safe accommodation of as many Afghans as possible, since the Taliban took over Afghanistan’s government.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) honourable minister E.L. Mendicino, Minister of National Defence, the honourable Harjit. S. Sajjan and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the honourable Marc Garneau have announced to resettle 20,000 vulnerable Afghans threatened who are threatened by the Taliban.

Canada’s special migration program for Afghans focusses on vulnerable groups in Afghanistan including women leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, persecuted religious minorities, LGBTI individuals and family members of previously resettled interpreters (who had worked with or assisted the NATO task force). This program will also support government and private sponsored refugees and individuals sponsored by their family already in Canada.

Canada hopes to ease the burden of Afghans by shouldering and offering a permanent home in Canada. The special resettlement program has started their resettlement with the help of international and domestic partners.

Many Canadian institutions have also come out in support of the Afghans, like the Manmeet Singh Bullar foundation which is working to resettle hundreds of persecuted Afghan Sikhs and Hindus. These efforts will continue to guide many vulnerable groups in Afghanistan needing help over the months to come.
