According to Statistics Canada, the number of job vacancies in Canada reached a record high of 912,600 in the third quarter of 2021. Because of the Covid pandemic, record-high job openings coincided with increased employment and a lower unemployment rate in Canada.

The data from Statistics Canada shed insight on some of the aspects that go into the monthly job vacancy data, such as sectoral and regional disparities in unmet labour demand, changes in the occupation and skill profile of vacancies including recent salary trends.

The total number of job vacancies across all industries increased by 349,700 from the previous year’s corresponding period. Job vacancies increased in all provinces of Canada in the third quarter of 2021 as compared to the same period two years prior.

The growth in job vacancies has been driven mainly by five industries: health care, construction, accommodation and food, retail commerce, and manufacturing. Increase in job vacancies might indicate a variety of changes in labour market conditions in various industries and regions.

New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh believes that investment in social services including pharma care, dental care, and mental health support would lead to higher job creation.

In August, employment increased in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia, while other provinces saw little or no change. British Columbia remained the lone province with employment that was higher than it was before the outbreak.

Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses had the highest job openings in the second quarter of 2021, compared to the first quarter of 2019.

According to the analysis, Canada could add nearly two million workers to the labour market by better integrating youths, immigrants and providing incentives for older workers to stay, including more workplace flexibility and phased retirement opportunities.

While high job vacancies can be an indicator of growing employment, they can also be a signal of high turnover, labour shortages or mismatches between the characteristics of vacant positions and those of available workers,” says the report according to Statistics Canada.
