In the rankings of the most welcoming countries for refugees, Canada is rising up, a new report by an international think-tank shows. “Canada is becoming a more attractive and inclusive global destination among the English-speaking countries,” says Thomas Huddleston, Migration Policy Group’s research analyst.

The international scorecard of the MIPEX lists the policy success of 52 nations from five continents. Canada won a high score of 80 this year, putting it fourth in the world for its robust, immigrant-friendly policies that prioritise newcomers’ fair rights, opportunities, and protection.

“The results from MIPEX allow us to assess whether our policies support or prevent newcomers from moving into Canadian society,” says Anna Triandafyllidou, the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Ryerson University.

“The index enables us to compare our performance over time and find out where we could improve or learn from other countries,” she added.

Canada’s greatest asset, according to the international think-tank, is in its anti-discrimination policies. Thanks to its world-leading laws and policies, including the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its national multiculturalism policies, it earned a top ranking. With its new scorecard, the organisation acknowledged that permanent residents in Canada have the ability to gain citizenship, and thus voting rights, reasonably easily.

Mobility in the labour market requires the greatest amount of change, says the recent studies. In Canada, migrants without legal documentation or with restricted temporary work permits also face job obstacles and limited access to healthcare. The index is a global benchmark for integration policies and is widely used by policy makers, civil society, academics and the media. The policies put in place by policymakers have an effect on how easily immigrants can find jobs, have access to language and educational opportunities, build a sense of belonging and evolve to become people who participate completely in society.

A Gallup survey of Canadian attitudes to immigrants also reveals that, when it comes to newcomers, they are the most welcoming people in the world. Canada received the highest score, 8.46, suggesting that Canadians are the most welcoming people in the world when it comes to immigration.
