Caregivers Immigration | IRCC Launches 2 New Pilot Programs

The government of Canada has launched two new caregiver programs – the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilot programs. The new pilot programs replace the existing expiring caregiver programs – the Caring for Children and Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilots. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started accepting applications under the new pilot programs from 18 June 2019 onwards.

Caregivers will now only receive a work permit if they succeed in securing a job offer in Canada and meet standard criteria for economic immigration programs. Once started working in Canada, caregivers will be able start aggregating the required 2 years of Canadian work experience to apply for permanent residence.

Following are the benefits caregivers will have in the newly launched pilot programs:

They will receive occupation-specific work permits rather than employer-specific, which will allow caregivers to switch jobs as necessary;

Their immediate family will receive open work permits and/or study permits, which will help the caregivers’ families to come to Canada together; and

They will be able to quickly transition the temporary status to permanent residence status once they have completed the work experience requirement for permanent residence.

“Canada is caring for our caregivers,” said the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in the press meet. “We made a commitment to improve the lives of caregivers and their families who come from around the world to care for our loved ones and with these new pilots, we are doing exactly that.”

The new pilot programs provide caregivers from abroad and their families with a clear, direct pathway to Canadian permanent residence.
