International Migrants day

Considering the enormous number of migrants in the world, the United Nations General Assembly, on December 4, 2000 had decided to consider December 18th as the International Migrants Day. The General Assembly had already adopted the International Convention on the protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their families and this is why the date was chosen.

This day is observed in many countries worldwide by intergovernmental and non-governmental organization through the broadcast of information on human rights and fundamental political freedoms of migrants, and through sharing of experiences and the preparation of measures to make sure the well-being of migrants.

Reasons for the Day

After the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members of Their Families in December 18, 1990, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations started celebrating December 18th as the international Day of Solidarity with Migrants.

Constructing on this enterprise, December 18 with the support from Migrant Rights International and the Steering Committee for the Global Campaign for Ratification of the International Convention on Migrants’ Rights and other organizations, started a campaign in 1999 for the official UN designation of an International Migrant’s Day, which was announced on December 4, 2000.

The UN’s proclamation of the International Migrant’s Day has helped people who are concerned and wants to ensure the protection of the migrants to take this as a chance to gather together. The UN invited all its member states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to promote this day by spreading information on human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, sharing experiences, and ensuring the protection of migrants.
